13 Jul Fishing in Merimbula NSW – Tips and Hints
Great tips and hints for fishing in Merimbula NSW
The Sapphire-blue waters of our many beaches, headlands and lake systems offer some excellent fishing opportunities for all anglers. There are many fishing options to consider, from family fun for young beginners, through to professional charters for the more serious angler.
Both Short Point Beach as well as Middle Beach are easily accessible for anglers staying in Merimbula. Most common species off the beach include Australian Salmon, Tailor and Flathead. Best bait and rig options are whole pilchards (salted or plain) on a gang-hook with a running pyramid sinker. We have found the best time to fish for Australian Salmon is 1 hour before high tide. Look out for the deeper gutters where waves aren’t breaking.
Lake / Estuary Fishing
Back Lake is accessible from the Short Point car park (or a short stroll down the lawn if you’re staying at Beach Cabins Merimbula) and offers good fishing options for Flathead and Bream. Both bait (prawns or pilchards) as well as lures (soft plastics) are the best options here. Look out for the deeper channels and pools along the eastern or northern shorelines.
Merimbula Lake is also a good option: the channel coming into the lake offers good spots, such as near Mitchies Jetty, or near Spencer Park; especially for children or beginner anglers. The area around the bridge is good for Trevally. You can also hire a boat from Top Lake Boat Hire:
or from Merimbula Marina: https://merimbulamarina.com/
Short Point and Middle Beach
Short Point Headland is also easily accessible from the Short Point car park. There are good rock fishing options here with access to deeper water both on Short Point and further around towards Middle Beach.
There are Blackfish / Luderick to be found here either using bait or cabbage weed found on the rocks at low tide. Take care on the rocks and never turn your back on the water! Lifejackets are recommended for all rock anglers
Merimbula Wharf – Kingfish
Merimbula Wharf is an elevated platform offering good fishing access into clear deep water. There are often good catches of squid here and the occasional run of large Kingfish.
Bait / tackle options here are varied and include jigs, hard-bodied lures and live bait. For tackle and bait advice and to get more information on Merimbula fishing tips and hints, consult our local fishing tackle shops: http://tackleworldmerimbula.com.au/
Deep Sea Fishing Charters off Merimbula:
There are many fishing charter services from Merimbula allowing access to the headlands and reefs for species such as Snapper, Morwong and Gummie Sharks and even trips to the shelf for bigger gamefish such as Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. Many of our guests have had good success either on their own boats or with one of these fishing charter operators:
